Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is such an important trait to develop. It is the currency of super-achievers. Without some level of this,  you cannot achieve much in life. Below are my top five tips for developing self-discipline.

1. Do Something You Enjoy.

I have learned that it is easier to stay consistent at something you enjoy. Humans are always seeking the path of least resistance. So, it might be less difficult to develop self-discipline if you engage in an activity that comes naturally to you. Otherwise, find something meaningful to you, even if you don’t like the activity. For example, I am learning French on Duolingo and it is not something I particularly enjoy doing. But I understand the significance of learning a second language to having a global career, so I just keep at it.

2. Be a Part of a Community.

I strongly believe that self-discipline can be fueled by interactions with other people. So,  Join a community in your area of focus and you would see some improvement to your self-mastery and discipline. As we interact with other people, we acquire bits and pieces about how they live their lives and we adapt the things we learn to ours.

Instagram has been one of my biggest tools for improving my self-discipline regarding exercise and fitness because I constantly engage with real people sharing information about how they stay consistent and so on.

3. Clarify your Priorities

Again, knowing what’s important to you will help you become more consistent and disciplined.

Have a mental picture of who you want to become or what you want to achieve and have faith that your efforts can take you to your goal.

Also, allocate some time for the things you need to do. For example, I spend about 4 hours every weekend creating writing content in the area of self-development. I have to take this bit into cognizance as I make decisions on how I spend my weekends.

However, as much as self-discipline is about honouring the commitments you make to yourself, whenever you can’t honour those commitments, no need to beat yourself up. Just try again, the next time.

4. Take Baby Steps:

Setting huge goals can be overwhelming. So, take it easy.

Last week, I shared with you how doing little things consistently can make a difference long term.

Life is a marathon, so just pace yourself.

5. Engage with Self-Discipline Related Content Regularly.

This is probably one of the biggest secrets to developing self-mastery! Engage with media content on developing self-discipline regularly. So many thoughts run through our minds daily, so we tend to forget most of the things we come across. So my advice would be for you to read this sort of article once a month, just to remind yourself about what you have learned

So, those are my tips for gradually developing self-discipline.
